How a claim adds up.

Four things can make a bike claim bigger, and people miss them. Scroll and watch one example grow.

  • A range of injuries
  • Physio
  • Passengers
  • Children

The example is made up. It is not an average and not anyone's claim. In it, The rider has a broken collarbone, neck pain and anxiety, a passenger has neck pain and grazes, a child passenger has a wrist injury and anxiety.

Where most people start

One injury

A broken collarbone has its own guideline bracket. Plenty of claims stop here, with the one injury the person thought to mention.

  • CollarboneThe rider. Collarbone fracture
    £6,800 to £16,170

The claim so far

£6,800 to £16,170

Lever one

A range of injuries

A crash rarely causes one injury. Neck pain and anxiety on the bike afterwards each have a bracket of their own, and each is valued separately.

Courts do not simply add them up, but every injury that is recorded lifts the top of the range.

  • Anxiety, low mood or traumaThe rider. Anxiety or low mood that is easing
    £2,040 to £7,740
  • NeckThe rider. Three months to a year
    £3,240 to £5,750

The claim so far

£6,800 to £29,660

Lever two

Physio

Treatment is claimed too. What was paid for physiotherapy comes back at what it cost, on top of the injury figure.

The notes matter as much as the money. Physio records show how an injury is healing, and that medical evidence is what a bracket rests on.

  • PhysiotherapyExample: eight sessions at £60. Claimed at what it actually cost
    £480

The claim so far

£6,800 to £29,660 plus £480 costs

The cost shown is an example, not an average. Any real cost is claimed as it was paid.

Lever three

Passengers

A passenger on the bike has a claim of their own, even against the rider they were travelling with, because the rider's insurance covers passengers.

Their injuries are valued separately and sit alongside the rider's.

  • NeckA passenger. Up to three months
    Up to £3,240
  • Grazes, bruising or sprainsA passenger. Within 28 days
    £950 to £1,880

The claim so far, 2 people

£6,800 to £34,780 plus £480 costs

Lever four

Children

A child on the bike has a claim too. A parent brings it, a court approves any settlement, and the time limit does not begin until the child turns 18.

Children are often forgotten because they seem fine. Symptoms can show later, which is why their claim has its own time limit.

  • Anxiety, low mood or traumaA child passenger. Anxiety or low mood that is easing
    £2,040 to £7,740
  • WristA child passenger. Expected to recover within 12 months
    £4,670 to £6,270

The claim so far, 3 people

£8,840 to £48,790 plus £480 costs

That is one example

None of this is your claim. It shows how the pieces stack: more of the injuries recorded, treatment kept, and everyone who was hurt in the claim, children included.

Yours will be different, and the real figure depends on the medical evidence.

Brackets are from the Judicial College Guidelines, 18th edition, published April 2026. They are not averages and not a promise. Courts value the overall picture and do not simply add injuries together, so the top of a range is a ceiling. Last updated 26 October 2026. How our fee works.
